Manufacturing Division

The accomplishments of the Manufacturing Division have helped make George Kent (Malaysia) Berhad (GKM) a leader in water related products in the ASEAN region.

Since commencing manufacturing operations in 1965 with the assembly of water meters, GKM has made significant contributions to the nation’s manufacturing sector. This includes a technical assistance agreement and licensing agreement with Sekisui Aqua Systems Co. Ltd. of Japan that saw the introduction of Fibreglass Reinforced Polyester (FRP) panels for sectional water tanks in Malaysia in 1986, as well as diligent and relentless efforts to seek new technology, upgrade equipment and implement better practices that lead to higher quality products.

These have resulted in the sharing of technological expertise, product knowledge and installation techniques that has made GKM a name synonymous with professionalism and quality.

As the largest water meter manufacturer and leading manufacturer of brass products in the ASEAN region, GKM’s products meet the highest international standards and are the most widely used. GKM has a major market share in these ISO Class ‘C’ rated water meters in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines. These meters are also exported to countries such as Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea and Thailand.

In 1996, the head office and manufacturing plants relocated to a new RM42 million integrated facilities complex in Puchong known as the George Kent Technology Centre. With 22,000 square meters of factory floor space in the 17-acre complex, the plant employs 300 people trained to the highest standards.

Here, the manufacturing capabilities were upgraded and increased with the commission of a low-pressure die-casting production line and the addition of new forging and machining equipment to the manufacturing process. The plant is also equipped with the most advanced types of hot forging presses, casting, machining lathes and testing facilities that are capable of producing a wide range of high precision engineering brass products like water meters, stop valves, draw off taps, float operated valves, ferrules, ball valves, lockable valves, water connection fittings, LPG cylinder valves and a variety of OEM machined parts.

GKM’s wholly owned subsidiary, Brass Alloys Sdn Bhd, supplies most of the brass rods used by the plant from the 2,000 MT of brass rods it produces each year at its casting plant.

Production capacity per year reaches nearly 1 million water meters and 10 million pieces of other brass forged products, such as OEM water meter bodies, bib taps, stop cocks, ferrules, cap nuts and tail pieces, connectors and float valves.

Since beginning local production of FRP panels in 1986, GKM has also produced 60,000 panels, measuring 1-meter square each a year. Also known as Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) panels, these patented press moulded panels are manufactured to the strictest quality control standards based on extensive research and development that has enabled GKM to maintain industry prominence as a supplier of FRP water tank systems of superior quality and durability.

With stringent quality assurance systems in place, our entire manufacturing operations are fully ISO 9001:2000 certified for the production of water meters, brass fittings and FRP panels. Through strict adherence to product standards specified by Malaysian and international authorities, a number of our products have also been certified to various International Product Standards, thus emphasising our commitment to high precision, quality products that meets professional standards.
